Tweeting their own truths

As Venezuela endured another day of turmoil yesterday, misrepresentation of the scene on the ground became a hot topic. In the image above to the left, opposition figure María Corina Machado’s tweet shows protesters against the government of President Nicolás Maduro as they form an “SOS” sign, sending a message to the international community.

To the right, a photograph purporting to be of protests in Venezuela is shown to actually be from a previous demonstration in Chile in 2011, as a Maduro supporter noticed. Opposition leader Henrique Capriles added his voice to calls for fresh demonstrations by protesters yesterday, as the Mercosur backed the government and condemned “attempts to destablize the democratic order.”
