President to receive reformed Penal Code

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is tomorrow expected to receive the reformed Penal Code, put together by a special commission and which could be discussed in Congress as soon as March 1.

Those in charge of the project, including opposition lawmakers Federico Pinedo, of the PRO front, and the UCR's Ricardo Gil Lavedra, will present their initiative to CFK in an audience scheduled to take place at Government House.

"The meeting with the president will be in the afternoon at Government House, but we cannot reveal anything yet about the project. We will only talk about that once we have handed it to the president," Gil Lavedra indicated to Noticias Argentinas.

Pinedo added that the project sought to "create a new code, which contains all penal material within the code, not like now, where there are thousands of laws which help create chaos."

The project committee is presided over by Supreme Court justice Raúl Zaffaroni, who worked alongside Pinedo, Gil Lavedra, ex-Socialist Party lawmaker María Elena Barbagelata and ex-Security minister of Buenos Aires province, León Arslanian.
