Del Potro downs Monfils to advance in Rotterdam

Top seed Juan Martín Del Potro today triumphed in his opening match at the ATP Rotterdam Open, overcoming a potentially tricky clash with French star Gael Monfils to pass into the second round.

Monfils came from winning in Montpellier, but he had no answer to the Tandil native's accuracy on court. Del Potro came through in two sets, winning 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

It was Del Potro's first competitive match since going out of the Australian Open in the second round in injury, having taken a break to receive treatment on a wrist injury.

The Argentine No. 1 moves on to face another French challenger, Paul-Henri Mathieu, in the next round.
