Provincial gov'ts agree 25% limit on pay rises

The Economic Ministers and representatives of 15 provinces have agreed to set a target of 20-25 percent for upcoming pay negotiations with public sector employees, after meeting today in the City of Buenos Aires to discuss a strategy for salary rises.

The provincial representatives met in downtown Buenos Aires and further agreed to organise a new dialogue within the next two weeks, with the goal of setting a monthly summit.

According to reports, those present agreed to negotiate wage increases no higher than 25 percent, a figure lower than the aspirations of many trade unions. No decision was reached on whether negotiations would be allowed to reopen later in 2014, another union demand.

In what is expected to be a precedent for regional bargaining, the national government represented by Jorge Capitanich and Axel Kicillof opened negotiations with teachers employed centrally. An increase of 61 percent was rejected by the government, who also indicated that the agreement would take effect for the entire year.

Today's encounter included delegates from Buenos Aires, Catamarca, Chubut, La Pampa, Mendoza, Neuquén, Río Negro, Salta, Tierra del Fuego, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, San Luis, Jujuy, Formosa and the City of Buenos Aires, while the Córdoba minister could not attend.

Finance Minister for Corrientes, José Enrique Vaz Torres, commented that "different areas of the country are watching price behaviour after the measures taken by the national government."

"There is a lot of uncertainty, for example we look at petroleum and Shell have not rolled back their prices; all this puts a great strain on the state," he added, while sustaining that "we have a positive outlook, but we have to be patient... the biggest enemy is inflation."
