Truck involved in Mendoza crash may have been hijacked

Representatives of the truck company whose vehicle collided with a coach in Mendoza on Friday have claimed that the driver had been attacked by thieves, defending his record and experience.

"My impression is that - the truck driver, identified as Genesio Mariano, 35 - was hijacked," affirmed Sadi Antonio Guidini, logistics manager for Brazili-based ACM Transporte.

The crash claimed the lives of at least 17 individuals, three of those German tourists. The truck was driving on the wrong side of the highway, according to eyewitnesses.

"We think it is very strange what happened. The driver had a lot of experience, he does not drink and we are sure he had not drunk anything," Guidini asserteed.

For the company, several signs point to an attempted hijacking: that three bodies were found in the cabin, not just that of the driver, who apparently tried to use a panic button, and who did not stop in a Mendoza customs checkpoint to revise his cargo, as was planned.

"All of that is very surprising, he would not do something like this," Guidetti added.
