Costa hints at wider reach for 'Precios Cuidados'

Domestic Trade secretary Augusto Costa has given his full support to the 'Precios Cuidados' program, which controls the cost of basic food and household items; and revealed that the agreements could be extended to other sectors in the future.

"The program is not only in force, but it will be widened," Costa fired in today's interview with Pagina 12, while explaining how the scheme of price controls had been unveiled across the country.

"At the same time we are starting to study other prices. From there, in lots of supermarkets and businesses we saw price movements in reaction to devaluation. So to offer more price certainty in a context of distorted signals, we launched the School Basket and controls in construction," he signalled.

The secretary went on to explain that his office was "permanently receiving complaints" from consumers reporting infractions of the agreement. While admitting that various sanctions had already been issued, Costa insisted that Precios Cuidados did not constitute a rigid price control.

"Precios Cuidados' goal is not to lower prices, but to give a reference value," he asserted. The politician added, when asked about heavy rises in the price of beef, that a reduction in costs would be seen "from the start of this week."
