Argentina fall to Italy in Davis Cup after Berlocq defeat

The Argentine mens' tennis team will have to play for their right to remain in the Davis Cup World Group for the first time in 22 years, after going down today against Italy in the first round of the international competition.

Carlos Berlocq's defeat against Fabio Fognini left the Italians with an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, meaning Juan Mónaco's clash against Andrea Seppi later this afternoon is a dead rubber.

Fognini was in control throughout the fourth match of the series and, after taking the first set on a tie-break, withstood a second-set rally from Berlocq to triumph 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1 & 6-4 in four sets.

The Italian star thus completed a clean sweep of Davis Cup points in Mar del Plata, having defeated Mónaco on the first day before teaming up with Simone Bolelli yesterday to down Horacio Zeballos and Eduardo Schwank in the doubles event.
