Over 90 residents evacuated from San Pedro after storms

A street in San Pedro is left underwater after heavy rains provoked flooding in the Buenos Aires city.
More than 90 people had to be evacuated from the Buenos Aires city of San Pedro following a fierce storm, during which an estimated 150-200mm of rain over the course of 48 hours caused widespread flooding.

According to official data, 41 residents were removed from neighbourhoods of the city, situated on the banks of the Paraná river, and taken to the Sarmiento Institute and Integral Community Centre, while around 50 people left the area independently.

The rains also caused the collapse of four houses, while five people were hospitalised after suffering various injuries and were under observation in medical centres.

Government secretary Raúl Cheyllada revealed that "there were damages to buildings in the neighbourhood close to the port and in other affected neighbourhoods," such as San Francisco, Los Aramos and Los Aromitos.

"The Human Development [ministry] provided food and also sanitary assistance. The General Emergency Unit and Paediatric Unit of the hospital were made available, although no serious cases have been reported," the civil servant explained.
