Opposition activist reappears bruised and cut outside Kiev

A TV grab made on January 31, 2014 and taken from a same day broadcast of Ukrainian Channel 5 television shows Ukrainian opposition activist Dmytro Bulatov (AFP)

Opposition activist Dmytro Bulatov was found bruised and cut in a village near Kiev. He said his kidnappers beat him severely, nailed him to a cross, and sliced off a piece of his ear.

Bulatov disappeared without trace on 22 January. He was allegedly kidnapped and tortured for 8 days by a “death squad” composed by “Russian speaking” men, local media stated.

The activist was part of the protests that started after Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych backed out of an agreement to deepen ties with the European Union. The demonstrations quickly came to encompass an array of discontent over corruption, heavy-handed police and a dubious justice system.

“What happened to Dmytro is an act of intimidation against all activists”, opposition party leader Vitali Klitshkó denounced today.
