Capitanich defends policies, hits out against 'agro-exportation model'

Chief of Cabinet Jorge Capitanich has defended the redistribution policies of the national government, stating that the alternative would be a return to a model of agricultural exportation which "leaves out 10 million Argentines."

Speaking in today's interview with Pagina 12, Capitanich assured that "the economic policy defined by the president [Cristina Fernández de Kirchner] is based on import substitution, an accelerated industrialisation and growing exports," while signalling that "there is a permanent attempt to destabilise the government."

"There are many people who propose an 'agro-exportation' model," the Cabinet Chief stated.

"That would mean leaving 10 million Argentines out, or driving down salaries, or creating more exclusion."

Capitanich also referred to the policy of honouring Argentina's foreign debt burdens, pointing to the success of the program.

"We have experienced an evolution with respects to the debt program," he explained, adding that "roughly 43bn dollars have been earmarked for debt payments".

"If we had not cancelled the debt with the [International Monetary Fund] we would have policies that would have affected the development of economic activity," he maintained.
