Poet Juan Gelman dies at 83
The writer, poet and political activist Juan Gelman has died yesterday afternoon in the federal district of Mexico, stated Telam news agency, citing sources close to his family.
Gelman wrote more than 30 books and received the Cervantes prize in 2007, the most important award in Spanish literature.
He lived in Mexico for the past 20 years and worked as a weekly columnist for the Argentine newspaper Página 12, among other activities.
Gelman was born in Villa Crespo, Buenos Aires City. At the age of 15 he began his political activism in the Youth Communist Federation, and later he joined the revolutionary faction within the Peronist movement.
His granddaughter, Marcela Gelman flew last night from Uruguay to Mexico to participate in the wake, that will be carried out today.
