‘Israel killed most who carried out AMIA blast’
The diplomat who was Israeli ambassador to Argentina for seven years claims that Israel has killed most of those who were behind the attacks on the country’s embassy and a Jewish charity in Buenos Aires during the 1990s.
‘The vast majority of those responsible are no longer of this world, and we did that ourselves,” Itzhak Aviran, who was Israel’s ambassador to Argentina from 1993 to 2000, told the AJN Jewish news agency.
In 1994, 85 people were killed at the AMIA Jewish community centre, and hundreds injured, in an attack that Argentina has long said was masterminded by Iran. In 1992, a car bombing outside the Israeli embassy killed 29 people.
Those who carried out the attacks have still not been brought to justice and Argentine leaders are largely to blame, the former ambassador said.
“Neither (former president Carlos) Menem, nor (former president Fernando) de la Rúa, nor any of those who came afterward did anything to clear up what happened,” Aviran added. “Although I’m not in a position to ask anything of the Argentine government, we still need an answer about everything that happened.”
Argentine courts have charged eight Iranians over the AMIA bombing and last year Congress approved a deal sealed with Iran to jointly investigate the 1994 attack.
