Almost 70 injured in City New Year celebrations

New Year's celebrations in Buenos Aires left 67 needing hospital treatment, primarily for injuries suffered from fireworks and champagne corks as festivities got underway at midnight.

Of those hurt, 22 were treated in specialist eye hospital Pedro Lagleyze, in the La Paternal neighbourhood. Emergency supervisor Marcelo Oliveri revealed that of those admitted, 17 were adults and five children; adding that "20 suffered injuries due to fireworks and two from corks."

Meanwhile, Nancy Sichetti, of the Santa Lucia hospital, reported that injury numbers were lower than for the previous new year.

"[The injured] were down in numbers compared to last year, when 33 people were admitted, which is 30 percent less than in 2012," the doctor stated, having treated 21 patients in the San Cristobal clinic.
