'Electricity problems could be solved in 2014 if companies invest'

In his daily brief to the press at the government house, the cabinet chief rejected energy crisis accusations hitting the Cristina Fernández de Kirchner administration over the past weeks due to rolling power cuts and a record-hitting heat wave that continue to affect Buenos Aires City and its surrounding areas.

“We observe distribution problems (which are) duly identified and distribution companies will have to make the necessary investments to resolve such problems,” Jorge Capitanich said this morning affirming there is “no energy crisis problem.”

“There is no energy generation or transport problem but a distribution (problem) which is an exclusive and excluding responsibility of the companies that provide the service,” the head of ministers assured while addressing reporters at the Casa Rosada presidential palace.

In that sense, he explained investments in the energy sector that the federal government has carried out over the past decade accounts form “more than a third of what has been done in Argentina’s history."

“Whether they are public or private, companies will have to take responsibility to improve substantially the medium and low tension problems,” Jorge Capitanich insisted and pointed out there are 3,200 cameras, 500 patrol cars, 17,000 officers and a permanent overflight of the metropolitan area to respond to the “demands of neighbors, especially of the sick, pregnant women and the elderly.”

Meanwhile, the cabinet chief ratified the Enre electricity watchdog will analyze the sanctions and fines on Edesur and Edenor power distribution companies and a compensation scheme for users who have been left –and continue to be- in the dark for more than ten days.
