UCR, FAP, Civic Coalition to use Congress as ‘a lab’ for future deals

Non-Peronists contemplate presidential alliance

Starting next year, the Radical Party (UCR), the Broad Progressive Front (FAP) and the Civic Coalition (CC) will run a series of deals in Congress with the idea of presenting themselves as a “serious alternative” for voters in a context of growing competition among Peronist forces.
Both the UCR and FAP have already expressed their desire of reaching a consensus candidate for the 2015 presidentials, instead of going to the so-called PASO primaries set by the national government.
Their idea is to avoid a repeat of the Alliance front, a mostly non-Peronist alliance which won the 1999 elections but fell apart quickly afterwards.
The plan also aims to make strong leaderships co-exist peacefully.
Former Santa Fe governor and FAP leader Hermes Binner and the new Radical party chairman Ernesto Sanz are the most important leaders supporting this option.
Future accords
Congress will begin working as “a laboratory” for future accords, party leaders told news agency DyN.
But they also warned that if congressional deals prove to be impossible, it will be difficult to present a single ticket for the 2015 presidential elections.
In this context, Binner highlights the Social and Civic Progressive Front (FPCyS) coalition, which has been working together in Santa Fe province for the last 20 years.
Meanwhile, UNEN leader Elisa Carrió will keep her presidential aspirations for 2015, although she has not ruled out the possibility of running for city mayor.
“The best candidate is Carrió”, UNEN sources told news agency DyN.
Party estimates say the BA City leader is the only one capable of beating the ruling PRO centre-right party in the City, whose candidate has not yet been defined but may be Senator Gabriela Michetti.
