Energy union secretary warns: 'There will be more blackouts'

Rafael Mancuso holds a meeting with Federal Planning Minister Julio de Vido in November, shortly after taking over as head of the Power Workers'' Union
The general secretary of the City Light and Power Workers' Union Rafael Mancuso has pledged his support to the possible nationalisation of energy companies, while warning that blackouts will continue to happen because "the network has collapsed."

"The companies say that there is investment and they justify themselves by stating that this permits prices levels, but it is clear that it is insufficient," the union boss argued today, after a week in which many areas of the City and Buenos Aires provinces were affected by power cuts.

The director explained that before privatisation "there were 18,000 workers in the sector."

"Now with a demand three times higher than in that period, we have just 5000 permanent workers and another 4000 that are contracted and it is impossible to take on all issues at the same time," he maintained.

Mancuso revealed his support for state intervention in the network, which in Greater Buenos Aires is administered by private companies Edenor and Edesur.

"Our philosophy as a union is that we would prefer that as a public service it is in the hands of the state," he signalled.

"If the government decides to nationalise the energy companies, we will support the measure."
