Pope Francis: Every family should have home

Pope Francis today called on governments and social services across the world to "do everything possible so that people can have a home of their own."

The Argentine pontiff gave a short speech from the window of the papal residence in the Vatican City to mark the traditional Angelus prayer, in front of thousands of people who had crowded into St. Peter's Square.

"I see down there written in giant letters [on a sign]: 'The poor cannot wait!' That is very true," Francis explained.

"There are so many families without a home, either because they have never had one or because they have lost it for another reason. Family and home are one and the same! It is very difficult to carry a family forward if they have no place to live," the head of the Catholic church fired.

The pope also addressed Italian protestors demonstrating against austerity policies in the nation, calling on them to "contribute positively without giving in to the temprations of confrontation and violence."

And he concluded by wishing the world a "Christmas of hope, justice and brotherhood."
