This handout picture released by the Vatican press office shows Pope Francis holding the jersey of San Lorenzo''s Argentinian football club as he poses with team members after his general audience at St Peter''s square at the Vatican. San Lorenzo''s players won the Argentina''s first division football Championship at Jose Amalfitani stadium in Buenos Aires.

Pope Francis today celebrated his beloved San Lorenzo's victory in the Argentinee soccer championship, hoisting a replica of their trophy for all to see.

A small group of team managers and players, including the club's vicepresident, TV host Marcelo Tinelli, met with Francis on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica at the end of his Wednesday general audience.

The group presented him with the replica of the trophy and a red and blue team jersey with "Francisco Campeon," Francis Champion, written on the back. A clearly pleased Francis raised the trophy and confirmed to the group he would make his first visit to Argentina as pontiff in 2016, to preside the National Eucharistic Congress to be held that year in the province of Tucumán.

San Lorenzo, of which then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a registered fan, clinched the Argentine championship Sunday.
