Draw enough to crown San Lorenzo Inicial champions

San Lorenzo were confirmed tonight as the champions of the 2013 Inicial Championship, taking the title after drawing 0-0 away to Vélez Sarsfield.

In a tense match lacking in goalmouth action, the visitors could have guaranteed themselves the trophy with a win. But the club played it safe, nullifying Velez's attacking threat and cruising towards a share of the points.

The Ciclón's point was sufficient thanks to a tie between Newell's Old Boys and Lanús, two other teams with a mathematical chance of victory in a delayed final round of clashes. Pablo Pérez had raised Newell's hopes of pushing the tournament to a play-off, when the midfielder turned in from close range.

Paolo Goltz equalised with a header, but the Lepra came straight back into contention. A shot from outside the area appeared to be heading wide, but Carlos Izquierdoz's deflection put the ball past his own keeper.

Lanús did not rest, and though Jorge Pereyra Díaz restored parity at 2-2 neither club could find the winner that would keep the title away from Bajo Flores. San Lorenzo therefore finish the 19-game season with 33 points, with Vélez, Lanús and Newell's trailing on 31.

San Lorenzo celebrate their first title since 2007, when a side directed by current River Plate coach Ramón Díaz prevailed in that year's Clausura championship.
