Majestic Maidana crowned champion

Argentine pugilist Marcos Maidana has been crowned World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight champion, after defeating title holder Adrien Broner by a unanimous decision in the early hours of this morning.

After twice putting the local favourite on the canvas in San Antonio, Texas, all three judges judges decided in favour of Maidana, who won by margins of 115-110, 117-109 and 116-109 on the cards.

The 30-year-old Argentina therefore lifted his second world title, having previously held the WBA Super-Lightweight belt.

Broner, 24, suffered the first defeat of his professional career having previously put together a run of 27 consecutive victories, 22 of those coming through knockout. Maidana, meanwhile, boasts a record of 35 wins, 31 of those coming inside the distance, and three losses.

After enjoying the biggest victory of his career, a match-up with Floyd Mayweather Junior - widely considered the best pound for pound fighter in the world - could be arranged for Maidana.
