Milani promotion passes through Senate Committee hearing
Victory Front politicians have approved the promotion of Army Chief César Milani and it will be put up for vote during an upcoming session of the Senate next Wednesday.
In the meeting of the Upper House's Accord Committee, government-linked members obtained nine votes in favour of promoting Milani from Division General to Lieutenant General.
Opposition senators tried to prevent the move, presenting suspicions regarding the officer's possible involvement in crimes against humanity, during the dictatorship of 1976-1983.
Representatives of the government, however, maintained that Milani was not facing any charges and therefore the principle of innocence has to take precedent.
