FARC invite Diego Maradona to Havana 'Peace Game'

Colombian guerrilla organisation The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) have sent out an SOS plea to Diego Maradona, inviting the Argentine football legend to play a "Peace Game" in the Cuban capital of Havana.

The organisation on Saturday accepted a proposal from Carlos Valderrama to arrange a peace initiative centred around a game of football. Currently in Havana negotiating with the Colombian government, the FARC delegation today made public their wish to see Maradona in attendance.

"It is necessary for us to have a strong representation at our side and we are going to send an SOS from Havana asking for Diego Armando Maradona's help in this peace process," commander Iván Márquez told reporters.

Márquez added that the call for Maradona was made so that "he joins us and plays with us, so that we can finally try to reach a peace that has been so elusive for decades."

The FARC delegation, headed by Márquez, has been negotiating for the past year with government representatives, over a five point plan designed to end Colombia's civil war.

Tentative agreements on political participation and the agrarian question have been made, while delegates continue to discuss the issue of illicit narcotics, reparations for victims of the armed conflict and the destruction of the guerilla group's weapons.
