Nalbandian avoids talking about Del Potro’s withdrawal
“I am a former player. I read the letter (Juan Martín) Del Potro sent to the Argentine Tennis Association (AAT) citing his reasons for withdrawing from the first round Davis Cup series but I do not know both sides’ arguments”, former world number three David Nalbandian said yesterday in a press conference held in the Usina del Arte in La Boca neighbourhood ahead of his farewell against Rafael Nadal.
“It is a pity that Juan Martín is not in the team but I am not part of the disagreement”, he added.
Del Potro did not play the Davis Cup in 2012 and has already said that he will not take part in the competition in the first series against Italy from January 31 to February 2, citing that the AAT has always mantained a hypocrite approach in the negotiation.
“I am fit enough for both exhibition matches. I am sure I will enjoy the farewell,” Nalbandian added. “I have not yet realized that I have retired because I keep training every morning. The difference is that I have the afternoons off in order to enjoy my family and to learn to become a good father for my daughter”.
Nalbandian, who announced his retirement from professional tennis in October, will face Nadal tomorrow in Córdoba and on Saturday in Buenos Aires.
