San Lorenzo wins derby against Boca
Ángel Correa scores only goal in 1-0 victory
Ángel Correa gave San Lorenzo a 1-0 victory over Boca Juniors in a derby at the Nuevo Gasómetro stadium. Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team moved to within two points of leader Newell’s Old Boys in the standings.
San Lorenzo pulled to within two points of the leader in the Initial Tournament with a 1-0 victory yesterday over rival Boca Juniors at the Nuevo Gasómetro stadium.
Ángel Correa scored in the 47th minute, sweeping in and driving a close-range shot into the top of the net.
San Lorenzo now has 26 points, two behind leader Newell’s Old Boys. Arsenal de Sarandí has 25 and Boca 24 after 14 of 19 matches. Lanús has 22 points.
Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team was better than Boca throughout the match, but managed only one goal despite dominating.
Boca’s goalkeeper Agustín Orión saved a penalty by playmaker Leandro Romagnoli in the 25th minute that could have given an early lead for the host.
Three minutes before the end of the match, Boca was also awarded a penalty but Sebastián Torrico blocked Claudio “Chiqui” Pérez’s shot. Pérez had never missed a penalty before in his professional career.
Boca broke that run of seven matches without defeats, while San Lorenzo recovered from its 3-2 loss against Lanús last week.
Earlier, Lanús, which played with mostly reserves, defeated Tigre 3-2 in Victoria, accumulating its third victory in a row.
Nicolás Pasquini, Ismael Blanco and Fernando Barrientos scored to put Lanús 3-0 ahead. Tigre played with 10 players after Diego Castaño was sent off in the 41st minute.
However, the host did not give up, and Matías Pérez García pulled one back in the 84th and Facundo Sánches netted another in the 87th.
Lanús coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto decided to use his reserves as the team faces River Plate on Wednesday in the return leg of their South American Cup quarterfinals series.
Vélez Sarsfield also played with a reserve team and rescued a point at the Centenario stadium drawing 1-1 with Quilmes.
Facundo Diz gave the host the lead in the 21st minute, but Facundo Cardozo equalized for Vélez in the 82nd.
Ricardo Gareca’s side, which will face Ponte Preta of Brazil on Thursday for the second leg of their South American Cup quarterfinals series, finished the match with nine players after Eros Medaglia and Ramiro Cáseres were sent off in the second half.
River and Estudiantes de La Plata were playing last night at press time at the Monumental stadium in Núñez.
