Hurling win 3-2, safe... just, for now
Hurling won 3-2 at 9-point leaders GEBA as the last round of matches in the Metropolitan Women’s First Division A was played yesterday. Hurling’s winner five minutes from the end saved them from direct relegation, ahead of St Catherine’s who also won 3-2 against Club Italiano, have the same goal difference of minus 11, but won a match more during the regular championship. Top goal scorer is Macarena Rojas (Ciudad) with 16 goals and Macarena Abete Gayda (Belgrano) second with 14.
Antonella Rinaldi put GEBA ahead in 19 minutes, although Hurling, with more at stake, attacked more with Tatiana Minadeo a constant worry. GEBA’s only near chance was a hit on a post from one of their four penalty corners and Julieta Albaracín equalized from one of Hurling’s four penalty corners in 34 minutes. But the second half had barely started when Florencia Habif raced through Hurling’s defence to put GEBA ahead again from a goalkeeper rebound.
Justina Ortíz netted Hurling’s deserved equalizer with 10 minutes to go and they furiously pressed GEBA’s now shaky defence. Martina Caballero scored the winner when GEBA had two temporarily suspended players off the field.
With the top six for the playoffs already decided last week, the other vital clash was between Bartolomé Mitre and SIC in the relegation zone. Mitre just won 1-0 at home to move into the re-classification zone with St Catherine’s (Having to face the 3rd and 4th First Division B teams), while SIC are directly relegated together with Liceo Naval.
The playoffs start next week-end at Ciudad de Buenos Aires with 3rd to 6th matches on Saturday and semi-finals on Sunday for both men and women.
