Ellerstina reaches Hurlingham final
Despite having played below form, Ellerstina managed to overcome La Natividad 16-13 to win the Zone B of the 120th HSBC Hurlingham Open. With yesterday‘s triumph, brother Pieres’ squad will clash against La Dolfina to decide the oldest tournament in the world. It will be the eleventh time in a row that the same teams play a final of the Triple Crown.
Ellerstina took a thee goal leading margin at the start of the first chukker and it seemed that La Natividad would be another victim of their talent, but when the period was finishing Guillermo Casset Jr pulled one back. In the second game, the losers started to develop an ordered team work, marking hard in the midfield and stopping their rivals’ best men, Facundo Pieres.
Giving their best, green-shirt men equalized 5-5 in the second chukker and then went ahead for the first time in the match (6-5) in the third. On the other side, their opponents could not find their rhythm.
The next three chukkers were even and hard fought, with both squads going goal to goal. Ellerstina had many problems in controlling the ball, while La Natividad took advantage of its errors.
Otherwise, the Pieres brothers finished ahead 12-11 the sixth period, but bolstered on their hard-fighting and well built team work La Natividad equalized 13-13 in the seventh.
The final seven minutes were very exciting, with both sides playing nervously and it was then when Ellerstina showed their best individualities and with two goals scored by Facundo (one of them through a place penalty) and another by Gonzalo Pieres Jr., they clinched a difficult victory.
Like seven days before, the first encounter was suspended as Eduardo Novillo Astrada fell from his horse in the first chukker and thus both teams decided not to continue the actions as a result of the poor state of the field. La Aguada Las Monjitas was beating Magual 3-2.
