Tension at public university student protest
Leftist university student groups were gathering in the City outside the dean’s office of the Buenos Aires University (UBA) to halt the election to renew university authorities.
Incidents began when hooded demonstrators clashed with police officers.
"Our idea is to block the faculty entrance for authorities to vote a new dean,” the president of FUBA student organization Julián Asiner, told reporters.
Outgoing Dean Jorge Aliaga locked himself in his office at the university last Tuesday and left today although tensions persisted.
“We have gone through 30 years of democracy and this kind of mechanisms are not aceptable any more,” Aliaga stressed, criticizing student sectors which are trying to stop the elections to renew university authorities.
Students of the Social Science Faculty today resumed a takeover to reject what they consider “irregular elections” called by the dean.
