Independiente fails to keep advantage
Draws 1-1 with Unión at home to stay far from the top
Daniel “Rolfi” Montenegro put Independiente ahead with a penalty in the 29th minute, but the host could not keep its advantage and Unión equalized in the 54th for the final 1-1 draw at the Libertadores de América stadium in Avellaneda.
Independiente could not keep its advantage yesterday and drew 1-1 with Unión at the Libertadores de América stadium in Avellaneda in a key match for the National B Division tournament.
Daniel “Rolfi” Montenegro, with a penalty in the first half, and Uruguayan Brahian Alemán, in the second half after a fantastic play by Sebastián Palacios, scored the goals in an even game for the 11th round of the championship.
The match was originally scheduled for October 4, but it was suspended a few hours before the start when 37 hooligans were arrested close to the stadium to prevent clashes between two sides of the club’s “barrabravas”.
With this result, Unión climbed to be alone in third place with 23 points, while Independiente accumulated 18, 14 behind leader Banfield.
Omar de Felippe’s team came from a victory against Crucero del Norte last week and needed another win to get close to the top of the standings. In the first half, the host was the best of both sides and found the net in the 29th minute. Cristian Menéndez was fouled inside the box by goalkeeper Daniel Islas and referee Diego Ceballos awarded a penalty for Independiente. Montenegro’s shot was blocked by Islas, but Ceballos ordered it retaken because the goalkeeper rushed off his line. “Rolfi” scored with a fierce shot in his second opportunity for the joy of the local fans.
After the goal, Independiente played with counter attacks for the rest of the first half, while Unión could not find the way to create a clear chance to equalize.
However, everything changed in the second half. The visitors started convinced of scoring a goal and after only a few seconds, Emanuel Moreno hit the crossbar with his shot.
In the 54th minute, Juan Manuel Trejo lost the ball in the midfield and Unión took advantage of the mistake to equalize. Palacios took the ball and left behind three Independiente players before crossing the ball to Alemán, who sent it home with a header.
De Felippe’s team played nervously for the rest of the match and failed to create scoring chances. Unión left Avellaneda with an important point that put it in the promotion zone.
Independiente will visit Sportivo Belgrano for the 14th round, while Unión will host Patronato.
