Uruguayan Mujica dismisses UPM row: 'Only God gives ultimatums'
Uruguay’s president José Mujica today disparaged demands for discussions set by the Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman to go back into negotiations regarding the UPM paper plant.
“Only God can give out ultimatums”, declared Mujica, making light of the minister's threat to go before the International Court at The Hague if Uruguay refuse to reopen talks.
The head of state also ordered his officials to maintain silence on the matter until Luis Almagro –his Foreign Minister- returns from an official visit in Japan.
“At this moment, the issue will not be addressed. The president asked for silence, therefore, no response will be expressed in reaction to Timerman’s statements”, unnamed sources from the Uruguayan embassy revealed.
Timerman previously urged Mujica to “retract his decision” authorizing an increase in production at the former Botnia plant, and requested that he “return to talks”.
