Bianchi: ‘We played like it was a cup match’
Boca Juniors coach Carlos Bianchi said that his team won the “Superderby” 1-0 against River Plate because it played it “like a cup match.”
“We had a difficult week, with many injuries and other issues that had influence in the players’ morale. I think the team became stronger because of that. We played like in a cup match,” said Bianchi after the game.
The “Virrey” compared yesterday’s victory with the night of June 17 2004, when Boca defeated River in penalties to eliminate them from the Libertadores Cup semifinals in front of 70 thousands River fans.
“That night was different, because we played for a place in the cup final. Today (yesterday), it was like a cup match because of the atmosphere in the stadium. We knew that he had to play like this,” added Bianchi.
The important thing is to accumulate victories, get used to a play style and to have a solid defence. We played with different defenders in the last four games and that gives me a lot of confidence,” said the coach, whose team won two matches in a row for the first time in 39 rounds.
Meanwhile, River coach Ramón Díaz said that “a draw would have been a fair result” during a press conference after the “Superderby.”
“In the first half were the dominant side. In the second, we created chances to score. A draw would have been a fair result. We put pressure on them and had many opportunities, but we failed to score,” said Díaz, who extended his contract with the club for two more years on Friday. “This is soccer. We will see at the end of the season who wins a title.”
