Leader Newell’s beats Quilmes 2-0
Defending champion and leader Newell’s Old Boys earned a deserved 2-0 victory over Quilmes yesterday in a match for the 10th round of the Initial Tournament.
The goals for the team coached by Alfredo Berti were scored by Maximiliano Rodríguez, in the 36th minute, and Diego Mateo, in the 55th.
“Maxi” Rodríguez is the leading goalscorer of the tournament with five goals along with San Lorenzo’s Martín Cauteruccio, who is injured and will miss the rest of the season.
With this result, Newell’s has 23 points and is four ahead of San Lorenzo, which was playing last night at press time against Tigre at the Nuevo Gasómetro stadium. Quilmes, which accumulated five games without victories — with four defeats and one draw — continues with 10 points.
Earlier, Estudiantes de La Plata was the best side when it faced Olimpo at the Roberto Caminatti stadium but it failed to win and only got a 1-1 draw.
Carlos Auzqui put the visiting team ahead in the 53rd minute, while Matías Sarulyte, a former Estudiantes player, equalized the match for Olimpo one minute before the end of the match.
The draw was not the best result for neither side. Estudiantes continued in the middle of the standings and is far from the top, while Olimpo stayed at the bottom of the relegation standings.
