Ramón Díaz extends contract
Coach signs for two more years with River Plate
Ramón Díaz extended his contract with River Plate yesterday three days before the “Superderby” against bitter rival Boca Juniors. “He is the coach that the River fan wants,” said club President Daniel Passarella in a press conference.
Coach Ramón Díaz extended his contract with River Plate for two more years yesterday after signing the agreement with President Daniel Passarella in Ezeiza.
“We’ve decided to extend the contract with Ramón because he is the coach that the River fan wants. He has a good relationship with the players and he works a lot with the young players from the lower divisions,” said Passarella during a press conference, which was also attended by River Vice-President Diego Turnes.
“We reduced the squad to 32 players when he had 50. River owns the transfers of most of those players and that’s very important. If we compare the club with when we arrived, there’s a big difference. Now, we have only two players whose contracts don’t belong to River: Marcelo Barovero and Jonathan Fabbro. But we could buy them if we decide to keep them in the club,” added Passarella. “Many youngsters have been promoted to the first division squad. We are living with complete calm with Ramón. He took charge of the team and finished in second place in the first tournament he competed.”
“You are doing a great job and it’s time to extend your contract,” said Passarella to Díaz. “We are going to support you until the end. Maybe in two months you will have to sit and talk with another person, we will see.”
River will host bitter rival Boca Juniors on Sunday and coach Díaz put Cristian Ledesma and Osmar Ferreyra in the first team in yesterday’s practice session, leaving Leonardo Ponzio and Ariel Rojas among the substitutes.
Yesterday, River’s first team was: Barovero; Gabriel Mercado, Jonatan Maidana, Éder Álvarez Balanta, Leonel Vangioni; Carlos Carbonero, Ledesma, Ferreyra; Manuel Lanzini; Federico Andrada and Teófilo Gutiérrez. Díaz will confirm the team today when the gives a press conference.
Meanwhile, Boca Juniors captain Juan Román Riquelme trained normally along with his teammates and is fully recovered to play the “Superderby” on Sunday.
Carlos Bianchi’s team would be: Agustín Orión; Cristian Erbes, Daniel “Cata” Díaz, Claudio “Chiqui” Pérez, Nahuel Zárate; Jesús Méndez, Fernando Gago, Juan Sánchez Miño; Riquelme; Juan Manuel Martínez and Emmanuel Gigliotti.
