San Lorenzo hammers Gimnasia
Pizzi’s team climb to the top after 3-0 victory
San Lorenzo climbed to the top of the Initial Tournament standings yesterday after beating Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 3-0 with goals scored by Ignacio Piatti (twice) and Pablo Alvarado in its best match of the tournament.
San Lorenzo showed its best performance of the season yesterday as it thrashed Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 3-0 at the Nuevo Gasómetro stadium and climbed to the top of the Initial Tournament standings.
Ignacio Piatti, in the 12th and 58th minutes, and Pablo Alvarado, in the 51st minute, scored for Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team, which is one of the favourites to win the title.
San Lorenzo leads the standings after ninth rounds with 19 points, but Newell’s Old Boys, which has 17, can reclaim the first place when it faces Argentinos Juniors today.
Yesterday, the host dominated the game since the beginning. Leandro Romagnoli and Piatti were the playmakers and controlled the ball in the midfield, while Gonzalo Verón’s speed in the attack complicated Gimnasia’s defence.
Also, Atlético Rafaela defeated Olimpo 2-0 at the Nuevo Monumental stadium in a key match for the fight to stay in the First Division.
Uruguayan Diego Vera and Federico González scored for the host, who gets stronger at home to stay at the top-flight. Olimpo lost its fifth match in the tournament and is at the bottom of the relegation standings.
