River suffer narrow Sudamericana reverse

River Plate fell to defeat in Ecuador, going down 2-1 away to Liga de Loja in the last-16 of the Copa Sudamericana. The Millonarios nevertheless netted a valuable away goal that will leave them well-placed for the second leg in Buenos Aires.

Ramón Díaz's men played a conservative game as they tried to adapt to the 2000m altitude at Loja's home, but it was the Ecuadorians who started strongest to take the lead.

Midfielder Pedro Larrea fired the hosts into the lead with a 32nd minute strike, an advantage they maintained up to half time.

River worked back into the game after the break, however, and a well-taken goal from Osmar Ferreyra left scores level with just over half an hour to play. But it was a brief respite; just seven minutes later Loja were awarded a penalty, calmly converted by forward Jonny Uchuari.

The Millo kept pushing, and only the linesman's flag prevented a second equaliser in injury time. The official judged that there was an offside in the build-up to Gabriel Mercado's header, ruling out the effort.

The second leg will be played at River's Estadio Monumental home in the coming week.
