12 injured in Retiro after train accident

The Buenos Aires train terminal at Retiro was the site of an accident when a locomotive crashed into a stationary formation on the San Martin line, leaving 12 passengers injured.

A separate incident in La Plata, meanwhile, where a cargo train hit a city bus, miraculously left no serious casualties, although several youngsters and a women received minor treatment at the scene.

According to reports from the scene, the collision happened after the driver of the bus ignored instructions not to pass the crossing at the intersection of 116th and 527th streets, and was subsequently hit by the cargo formation.

The crash in Retiro occurred in the afternoon during a routine change of locomotive at platform 4, prior to departure from the central BA station. The manouevre backfired when the engine failed to stop in time, colliding with the carriages with which it was supposed to be connected.

12 people were left needing minor treatment for injuries sustained in the crash, although a man of 65 years was taken to the Fernández hospital after sustaining a blow to the head. Service on the line, which runs from Retiro to Pilar in Buenos Aires province, was also interrupted.
