Newell’s Old Boys goes to the top
Beats Gimnasia y Esgrima LP 3-0Last season’s final championship winners, Newell’s Old Boys yesterday beat Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata 3-0 in a pending match from the second round of the Initial Tournament to go to the top of the table with 10 points, while former leader Gimnasia and Argentinos Juniors were left in second place with nine points.
Playing in their stadium in Rosario, Newell’s opened the score with a header, after a corner, by Gabriel Heinze in the 36th minute. Maximiliano Rodriguez, their other veteran returned from playing in Europe, made it 2-0, following good combined play after 54 minutes, while Rinaldo Cruzado scored the third goal four minutes from the end.
Newell’s Old Boys deserved their victory and were superior for most of the match with good ball play and passing. At times, Newell’s put a string of passes together without the La Plata team being able to touch the ball for periods. Former River Plate striker and French international David Trezeguet came on as a substitute after 72 minutes and helped his team in retaining the ball, but did not have any goal scoring chances while Newell’s goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán had hardly any work.
