Maradona celebrates first victory as Riestra 'spiritual coach'

Diego Maradona's tenure as the 'spiritual coach' of Primera D club Deportivo Riestra enjoyed a winning start, as the Buenos Aires outfit came from behind to win 2-1 against San Miguel.

The 1986 World Cup-winning captain was in the stands for the fifth division season curtain-raiser, played at Riestra's Guillermo Laza stadium in the southern City neighbourhood of Bajo Flores, alongside his father after being introduced to the Riestra faithful prior to kick-off.

The home team recovered from a poor first half to turn around a 1-0 deficit, and at the final whistle players celebrated wildly with Diego's name being chanted around the stadium.

The former Argentina national team coach owes his link with Riestra to lawyer Victor Stinfale, who has close connections with a sponsor of the tiny Primera D institution. His appointed role of 'spiritual coach' does not carry tactical responsibilities; instead, Maradona's role will be to inspire the club's playing staff as they strive for a successful 2012-14 season.
