A strong explosion shook a building in central Rosario today prompting panic among residents, and damaging three nearby buildings. Local authorities have confirmed 12 dead while 62 resulted injured. 12 people remain missing.
Preliminary reports said the explosion was registered at the building’s central heating system and was probably caused by a gas leak. “We were told that electric works were being carried out and that the cauldron was off”, a resident of the building located in 2000 Salta Street said.
Local media reported several people were injured and some residents were still trapped inside the building. Health Secretary of Rosario Leonardo Caruana confirmed 12 persons have been reported dead while over 60 people resulted injured.
Meanwhile, city Mayor Mónica Fein said 17 ambulances “are working” at the accident spot with authorities recommending the evacuation of nearby buildings. Fein also confirmed National Security Secretary Sergio Berni and Cabinet Chief Juan Manuel Abal Medina contacted her office to offer national assistance. The Special Rescue Group of the Federal Police was indeed on its way to Rosario in a flight from Buenos Aires.
