Prosecutor okays government claims against La Fraternidad union

Federal Prosecutor Federico Delgado ordered the investigation of the walkout launched by La Fraternidad engine drivers’ union on Wednesday. The national government had filed criminal charges against the organization commanded by Omar Maturano.

According to judicial sources, Prosecutor Delgado requested Judge Julián Ercolini to open a criminal investigation over Wednesday’s strike. Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo formally accused La Fraternidad of “public services obstruction” blasting the measure for “illegitimate” as it affected “around 800,000 commuters.”

In its case statement, the Interior and Transport Ministry affirms the government had announced plans on Tuesday to install cameras inside drivers’ cabins to provide “protection to workers and commuters” and to prevent “any doubts regarding drivers’ behave.”

The new surveillance system, according to Randazzo’s office, angered La Fraternidad and led to the surprising walkout.

“The following day the union decreed a strike under claims that companies were failing to pay the mid year bonus (carrying out) a force action that has no grounds since such payments have been set to be paid on the 4th working day of the month,” the document reads and targets also the “violent” groups that approached the Constitución train station on Wednesday’s night allegedly protesting the strike but shattering windows and destroying the place.
