Constitución incidents will not go 'unpunished,' Berni warns

Security Secretary Sergio Berni approaches the Constitución train station to supervise the police operations

Security Secretary Sergio Berni showed himself satisfied with police operations to deal with yesterday’s incidents at the Constitución train station in Buenos Aires City. Officers "guaranteed people could return home," the official said.

“(Police) acted in time and detained 18 vandals,” Berni told reporters from a local radio station and warned yesterday’s violent incidents “will not go unpunished.”

“What (the Police) did was to surround the conflict (site) at the Constitución station entrance in order to guarantee people’s access to buses so that they could return home. That is how they bought time to proceed with the detentions,” Arturo Puricelli’s second-in-command said.

The government arranged free bus services following the sudden train strike launched by La Fraternidad union with Berni finding the walkout “inexplicable.” In that sense, he backed the statements by Interior and Transport Minister Florencio Randazzo considering the unexpected action plan “responded to the government’s decision to offer better control by installing cameras inside drivers’ cabins” and not to arrears in the payment of 13th month salaries as unionized workers said.

“18 people were detained without using not a single tear gas and stopping these criminal from prompting chaos,” Berni added.
