Unionized train workers launch sudden strike, long-distance buses to follow

A sudden move by railway union La Fraternidad has left commuters of Roca, San Martín, Belgrano Sur, Sarmiento, Mitre and Tren de la Costa train lines without service.

Press spokesman of the union Horacio Caminos confirmed to ámbito.com that the action plan responds to arrears in the SAC extra salary payment. Caminos assured that the protest will continue “till companies abide by employment contracts”.

However, this new train conflict might be also explained following the impacts of the June 13 accident that left 3 people dead and hundreds injured when a Sarmiento train collided against another one halted in the Castelar station in Buenos Aires Province.

Authorities have been analyzing the possibility to install surveillance cameras inside drivers’ cabins. The federal government has indeed targeted the responsibility of the Castelar driver with a recent video stepping up the pressure on his responsibility.

The move to control train drivers plus the arrears in salary payments might be both fueling the row affecting now thousands using the train to go to work and get back home.

The train workers will shortly be joined on strike by workers on long-distance bus lines. Union director Roberto Fernández warned that the action could disrupt transport over the winter holidays.

"Our patience has worn thin and in the coming hours we will begin the strike on long-distances services because we have negotiated for seven months without an answer to our salary demands of a 23% increase," Fernández explained.

"The strike could be extended in such a way that they would affect the long-distance services for the winter vacation period," he warned.
