William-Alexander and Máxima attended their first official ceremony as Netherlands' Kings

The new Dutch King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima attend the National Remembrance ceremony at the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam

Joined by Prime Minister Mark Rutte.King William-Alexander and Queen Consort Argentine Máxima attended their first official ceremony to commemorate the National Memorial Day in Amsterdam.

The event took place at Dam Square in the capital of the Netherlands. Princess Beatriz didn’t participate in the event. However, she said she would join the Kings on Dutch Liberation Day, on May 5.

National Memory Day is held annually on May 4 in the Netherlands. It commemorates all civilians and members of the armed forces who have died in the Second World War and peacekeeping missions. Since 1961 the commemoration has extended to all wars' victims which prompted discomfort from the Dutch Jewish community.
