Five defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping and killing of adolescent Matías Berardi. The crime took place in 2010 in Escobar, a town in the province of Buenos Aires.

Among indicted are Richard Fabián Souto (46), his brother-in-law Néstor Facundo "el Chino" Maidana (25), Damián Sack (26), Gabriel Raúl "Larry" Figueroa (27) and Gonzalo Hernán Alvarez (34).

Meanwhile, Federal Court sentenced Ana Moyano, Souto’s wife to 24 years; his daughter Jennifer Souto to 17 years; his sister-in-law Celeste Moyano to 19 years; Federico Esteban Maidana to 21 years and Elías Emanuel Vivas to 18 years.

Only one defendant bypassed imprisonment since she was a minor when committing the crime three years ago.

Berardi (16) was kidnapped at 5:30am on September 28, 2010 at the intersection of the Route 26 and Panamerican Highwat, in Ingeniero Maschwitz when he was returning from a graduate’s party in the City of Buenos Aires. The gang kept him captive for 14 hours when Matías managed to escape yelling for help and saying he had been kidnapped. Neighbours, however, dismissed his desperate calls.
