Alicia Castro declines UK's invitation to attend Thatcher's funeral

Argentina''s ambassador to the UK Alicia Castro, Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and British MP Robin Walker address Malvinas'''' row in London

Argentine ambassador to the UK Alicia Castro has declined the oficial invitation to attend Margaret Thatcher’s funeral, Downing Street reported. Thatcher was Britain’s PM when Buenos Aires and London fought over the sovereignty of Malvinas Islands in 1982.

According to a spokesman of PM David Cameron, no Argentine officials will attend the ceremony that will take place at St. Paul's Cathedral on Wednesday this week.

When the list of guests to the funeral services were announced last week, London explicitly stressed that President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was not invited to the event but extended the invitation to Ms. Castro.

“Who cares if you are invited to a place where you already did not plan to go,” Argentine Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman told local reporters playing down UK’s position and ratifying Argentina’s long-standing sovereignty claims over the South Atlantic territories.
