Scioli summons teachers for negotiation meeting

Buenos Aires Province Governor Daniel Scioli summoned all provincial teachers’ unions for an emergency meeting, thus seeking to unblock the ongoing conflict as teachers claim for an increase in pay.

The meeting has been scheduled at 3pm at the Provincial Education and Culture offices in La Plata city and will count with BA Provinces’ Education Minister Nora de Lucía.

Earlier, the head of the SUTEBA teachers’ umbrella union, Roberto Baradel, told reporters that the 72-hour strike approved by the Teachers’ Union Front for April 8 to demand a new pay offer, could be halted if the provincial administration did call them for another round of negotiations.

Likewise, Baradel rejected all accusations made by Scioli as well provincial officials and stressed that the strikes “are not against anyone in particular. This is not against Scioli, this is in favor of the public education and a decent salary for all teachers.”

“We can accept a 300-peso monthly raise as proposed by the provincial authorities. I please ask all authorities to stop seeing phantoms, and focus all efforts in order to solve the problem.”

Also today, Scioli had considered “intimidating and wild” the 72-hour strike approved by the Teachers’ Union Front for April 8 to demand a new pay offer from the provincial administration.

Thus, Scioli expressed his dissatisfaction with the teachers’ unions which last week rejected a third offer of 22.6 percent increase in pay.

Likewise, the former vice President remarked that the “most affected ones here are the students”, and sent a straight message to union leaders, “They won’t get me to buy their tricks and/or provocations like when they say that we [BA province government] are not open to dialogue.”

“We have already made a huge fiscal effort to re-direct some 14 billion pesos in order to improve the teachers’ salaries throughout this year”, Scioli told reporters of Radio 10 AM station.

After rejecting a third offer of 22.6 percent last week, teachers will today carry out a “March of Torches” on the provincial government’s offices in this city at 7pm to press a 30 percent claim.
