Libertadores Cup: Newell’s Old Boys lose 2-1 at home
Newell’s Old Boys were beaten 2-1 at home by Universidad de Chile in Libertadores Cup group 7 last night which left the Chilean team with 6 points, while Newell’s, Olimpia (Paraguay) and Deportivo Lara (Venezuela) all have three, the last two from a match less.
Guillermo Marino, a former Newell’s player, gave Universidad an early lead which Charles Aránguiz increased with a penalty after 16 minutes. Just as the first half ended, Ignacio Scocco scored for Newell’s with a free kick. Both teams finished with 10 men, having Gabriel Heinze (Newell’s) and José Rojas (Univ.) sent off in the second half, but the Chilean team deserved victory.
Vélez Sarsfield’s next home match in the Libertadores Cup against Uruguay’s Peñarol on March 12 will have to be played without spectators due to the incidents caused by their fans in Montevideo against the same rivals.
