Argentina accuses UK of sending nuclear weapons to Malvinas

Argentina accused the UK of transporting nuclear armoury in submarines to the Malvinas Islands, violating the international treaties that set the zone as nuclear-free.

"We currently are in an unstable stage of the implementation of the Tlatelolco treaty, which bans the nuclear armoury in Latin America and Caribbean. This is being defied by the United Kingdom," Eduardo Zuain, Argentina's Foreign Relations secretary, stated before the Disarming Conference of the United Nations.

Besides, he blamed the UK of the unjustified military presence in the Southern Atlantic, "including submarines with the capacity to transport nuclear armoury to a nuclear-free area."

The Latin America and Caribbean treaty that bans the nuclear arms - known as the Treaty of Tlatelolco - in an international treaty that sets the territory as nuclear-free and was applied on April 25, 1969.

Zuain also criticized the fact that the Malvinas are among the most militarized territories in the world, with more than 1,500 British soldiers and 3,000 citizens.

Argentina urged the Disarm Conference, that began today in Geneva and that will last until March 1, to overcome the stalemate it has been under for the last 15 years and advance in several issues, Malvinas Islands among them.
