Moyano mulling presidential bid

Anti-gov’t CGT chief criticizes lack of ‘leadership’ in Justicialist Party

The secretary-general of the opposition CGT umbrella labour union group, Hugo Moyano, insisted yesterday that he “could be” a candidate in presidential elections in 2015, adding that his new political party, launched on Tuesday, was seeking alliances for the October legislative elections with “Peronist sectors that do not agree with how the (Peronist party) is run.”

“We’ll see,” said Moyano regarding his possible candidacy, adding that “some do not agree with me. It’s premature to talk about it.”

However, the CGT leader stated that “there is currently no leadership in the Justicialist (Peronist) Party” and that Peronism “does not exist at a national level.”

Moyano suggested that his new party, denominated Culture, Education and Work, would build “many alliances” with “many sectors, fundamentally those who disagree with how the (Peronist party) is being run.”

“We believe that we have to unite all efforts in order to succeed at the elections and bring to an end this absolute majority which the (ruling) party has in both houses of Congress, thus beginning to build a serious democracy and not permanent imposition, which is what currently happens with this government,” said the CGT head.

Pro-gov’t CGT meets

Amid rumours of unification with Moyano’s CGT, private health workers’ union secretary-general Héctor Daer, affiliated with Caló’s CGT, yesterday defiantly said that his union grouping “will not allow a ceiling to be imposed on collective bargaining.”

The spokesperson made statements to the press upon exiting a meeting held yesterday with other high-ranking pro-government CGT union leaders.

Daer warned that following the lack of response from the government to the proposals by the board, a meeting with the secretaries-general will take place within “20 to 25 days” to debate how “this CGT will proceed.”

A board meeting is also scheduled for tomorrow at the UOM metal workers union headquarters in the Buenos Aires City neighbourhood of Villa Lugano.
