Recoleta station axed
The long-planned and suspended Subte underground train station in Recoleta was yesterday officially postponed and transferred to a different site.
The construction of the station, which would have been located close to the famous Recoleta cemetery, was yesterday indefinitely suspended in a radio interview by the Director of the Buenos Aires City government Subte office (SBASE), Juan Pablo Piccardo.
According to Piccardo, the indefinite suspension of the construction, which could now occur next to the University of Buenos Aires Law Faculty, was due to two factors: “A lawsuit brought by the NGO Stop the Demolition, which forced us to suspend the work”; and the reduction of the amount of subsidies available to the SBASE following the transfer of responsibility of the Subte from the national government to the City on January 1, 2013.
“The work is not over, but will be postponed until a decision has been taken about what to do with the site. The station could easily be placed next to the Law Faculty,” said the SBASE director. Piccardo admitted that “this station could have been finished a long time ago. However, when we started work, we were hit by the NGO lawsuit, which forced us to stop.”
