City gov't studies 'multiple options' for Subway fare hike
The chairman of Empresa de Subterráneos de Buenos Aires (BA Subway Company) Juan Pablo Piccardo, discarded the idea of implementing a differentiated subway fare price during rush hours, though admitted that “numerous options are being studied.”
Thus, the City official explained during an interview with Radio Continental station that “the only sure thing so far is the City government’s call for a public audience in order to discuss a $3.50-peso fare (currently at 2.50), which will be the result of last year’s inflation we experienced.”
Though no one follows the INDEC National Statistics Bureau inflation rate, which for last year was indicated as to be of 11 percent, Piccardos assessment (40 percent) is way too far from that of 25 percent considered to be the real inflation considered by consumers and private consulting companies.
This would not be the first subway fare hike conducted by he administration of City Mayor and business tycoon Mauricio Macri, who in January of 2012 increased it by 127 percent taking it from 1.10 to 2.50 pesos.
To end, Piccardo assured that special fare prices for pensioners, students and handicapped people will remain the same.
